Seattle University Assistant Dies

Mike Nowell, assistant men’s basketball coach at Seattle University during the 2014-15 season, passed away Monday night at Virginia Mason Medical Center.

Nowell joined the Seattle U coaching staff last August after coaching stints at Garfield High School and within the Seattle Rotary Style Basketball AAU program. Nowell played for Clark Atlanta University from 1989 to 1993, earning SIAC first team all-conference honors from 1991 to 1993. He was the team’s freshman of the year and led the team in rebounding in 1990. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Kaplan University in 2009.

“Our family lost a great man. Coach Mike was as quality a person I have ever been around. It was an honor and a privilege to work with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lanie, Jaylen, and Shane,” Cameron Dollar, Seattle University head men’s basketball coach, said.

Nowell is survived by his wife Lanie and his sons Jaylen and Shane. Funeral arrangements are being finalized by his family. The Seattle University athletics department extends its condolences to the Nowell family and his friends.
