CSUN Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Brandon Martin today announced that he has extended Head Men’s Basketball Coach Reggie Theus‘ appointment through the 2019-20 season. Theus’ previous appointment extended through the end of the upcoming 2015-16 season, and four additional years have been added.
“I’m very pleased that the university is happy with the job that I’ve done and sees the future as brightly as I do,” said Theus. “Being a representative of CSUN has been great for me and it’s been an honor to be a part of the ‘Rise of the Matadors.’ I’m proud to have the opportunity to build this program into what I believe it can be.”
Theus enters his third season coaching the Matadors. In two seasons so far, he has led the team to the Big West Tournament twice and to the tournament final once. Prior to Theus’ arrival at CSUN, the last time the Matadors appeared in postseason competition was in 2011.
Under Theus’ leadership, the team and student-athletes have set 27 all-time CSUN records, four Big West Conference all-time records and two single-season national records. Three Matadors have been named to the All-Conference Team, numerous student-athletes have been selected as Big West Conference Players of the Week, several student-athletes have been honored at the Varsity N Scholar-Athlete Recognition Ceremony and 100% of his seniors have graduated.
“We believe in the direction Coach Theus is taking our men’s basketball team,” said Martin. “Without question he brings a high pedigree and an extraordinary coaching acumen to our program. He has unequivocally elevated our men’s basketball program and has been an advocate for advancing CSUN Athletics in the CSUN community, across Southern California and on a national level.”
In his short time at CSUN, Theus and his staff have recruited several student-athletes to the university from power five conference schools. New Matadors come from schools including UConn, the University of Washington, UNLV, the University of South Carolina and Texas A&M.
Theus played 13 seasons in the NBA and was a two-time NBA All-Star before beginning his coaching career. He has more than 12 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience, with previous stints at New Mexico State, the University of Louisville, the Sacramento Kings and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Upon his retirement from the NBA, Theus ranked 21st all-time in points scored and 10th all-time in assists. He was an All-American as a student-athlete at UNLV and had his jersey retired by the Rebels after being inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
Theus and the Matadors start the season with an exhibition game at home in The Matadome against Cal State LA on Thursday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. Following a tournament at Northern Illinois, regular season play opens up at home against Vanguard University on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Matadors travel to schools including USC, UCLA and Portland State before opening up big West Conference play on Jan. 6 vs. Long Beach State in The Matadome at 7:00 p.m.
