Riley Davis has been named the 10th Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Tyler Junior College, Director of Athletics Doug Wren announced.
“We are excited to welcome Coach Davis to Tyler Junior College to lead our men’s basketball program,” Wren said. “His experience at the Division I level, combined with his strong background in player development and analytics, makes him a great fit to guide this program forward. We look forward to the impact he will have on our student-athletes and the continued success of Apache basketball.”
Davis brings a wealth of experience to Tyler Junior College, with a diverse background spanning multiple levels of basketball, including NCAA Division I and the NBA.
Davis arrives at TJC following four seasons at East Carolina University, where he most recently served as associate head coach after spending his first three years as an assistant coach. During his tenure with the Pirates, he played a key role in player development, scouting, and game preparation at the Division I level.
Prior to East Carolina, Davis was on staff at UT Arlington, where he helped guide the Mavericks to multiple top-40 national rankings during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. In 2019-20, UTA ranked among the nation’s best in assist-to-turnover ratio (16th), three-point percentage defense (20th), fewest turnovers per game (29th), and assists per game (35th), while setting a program record by holding opponents to just 29.6 percent from beyond the arc. The following season, the Mavericks again ranked in the top 40 nationally in blocks per game (21st), steals per game (24th), turnover margin (33rd), and three-point field goals made per contest (37th).
Davis also brings experience from the University of Tennessee, where he served as video coordinator and director of player development for two seasons under head coach Rick Barnes. In that role, he was responsible for film analysis, scouting preparation, and on-court development.
He spent seven years at the University of Texas in various roles contributing to video operations and internal program management.
Following his initial stint at Texas, Davis served as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State during the 2012-13 season before gaining NBA experience as a regional advance scout for the Charlotte franchise during the 2013-14 season.
Davis earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Texas in 2011.
“Kayla and I are excited for this opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program and Tyler Junior College. It’s been 25 years since a new head coach has been named, and that can only point to Tyler Junior College being a great community. We are following in the footsteps of a great coach in Coach Mike Marquis. This is an opportunity for us to serve and pour every ounce of ourselves into the TJC Community, and we are blessed to do so.”
Details for an official introductory press conference for Coach Davis will be announced next month.
