Von Washington has been added to Western Illinois’ basketball program as the director of basketball operations.

“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to be apart of the basketball staff. I look forward to the opportunity to be able to learn and increase my knowledge of the game,” said Washington. “I also am excited to create and build new relationships with the student-athletes, coaches, faculty and fans here at Western Illinois University.”

As the director of basketball operations, Washington will oversee team travel, video and overall player development.

“After a thorough search, Von emerged as a great fit for our program. He is an ALLIN guy, comes highly recommended, and has been successful as a player and coach,” said Wright. “With prior head coaching experience, Von possesses the necessary qualities to have an immediate impact throughout our program.”

Washington comes from Quincy University where he served as an assistant coach under Ryan Hellenthal as well as the head junior varsity coach.

As a guard for the Hawks in 2016-2017, he helped guide Quincy University to 25 wins, which ranks third most in school history. His 13.9 points per contest helped Washington earn a spot on the All-GLVC team during his senior season. He led the Hawks to the 2017 GLVC Western Division title as well as an appearance in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

“I would like to thank Coach Ryan Hellenthal, Marty Bell, and Quincy University for giving me the opportunity to start my coaching career,” said Washington. “The relationships I made at Quincy not only as a player but also as a coach will last a lifetime. The past three years of my life spent in Quincy were memorable ones.”

Prior to Quincy, Washington spent three seasons at Western Michigan University and was a member of the 2014 MAC Championship squad that garnered an NCAA Tournament bid.

In his prep career at Kalamazoo Central, Washington won two consecutive state championships and was an all-conference performer.
