Walsh named Assistant Basketball Coach at Denver

The University of Denver men’s basketball program has hired Curran Walsh as a new assistant coach for the program, head coach Jeff Wulbrun announced.

“Curran is a great addition to our DU basketball program,” Wulbrun said. “He’s joining us after three seasons in the Pac-12 Conference at Utah which came after two years at Utah State, working all five seasons with highly-respected head coach Craig Smith. He has also worked with Mike Dunlap at Loyola Marymount. His experience in the Pac-12, Mountain West and WCC will provide tremendous benefits as we look for progress for a fourth-straight season here at DU.

“Curran is a student of the game and an absolute grinder. He will endear himself to our student-athletes and be a relentless recruiter with a voracious appetite for success. He will contribute heavily to the growth of our basketball program in a variety of different ways and lead the way for our players and program in chasing excellence. We welcome Curran and his fiancée Morgan to our DU family.”

Walsh comes to the Mile High City after three seasons as the Director of Men’s Basketball Operations for the University of Utah. In his time with the Utes, Utah went from under .500 in the year before his arrival and in his first season to 17-15 in 2022-23 and 22-15 with a trip to Indianapolis for the NIT Semifinals last season. 7-foot center Branden Carlson was a three-time All-Pac-12 selection during Walsh’s tenure, including a first-team honoree in each of the last two campaigns.

“I am truly honored for the opportunity to join the Denver basketball program. I have immense respect for Coach Wulbrun and elated to join his staff,” Walsh said. “The program continues to make positive strides every year since he has taken over. I’m excited to get to work with our team and help continue the elevation of this program moving forward.”

Prior to his time in Salt Lake, Walsh was the Director of Player Development at Utah State for two seasons. The Aggies earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament and a Mountain West Tournament Championship in his first year. Additionally, Walsh aided in developing the Aggies first NBA Draft pick since 1986 in All-American Sam Merrill.

Before his tenure in Logan with USU, Walsh served as a graduate manager for two seasons at Loyola Marymount, assisting with film work, scouting, scheduling and logistics while earning his master’s degree in educational studies. Prior to getting into the college basketball landscape, Walsh worked with Chris Johnson Hoops, leading the player development programs for several NBA and other professional basketball players.

A native of Effingham, Ill., Walsh played basketball at Lindenwood University-Belleville before graduating with a degree in business administration in 2016. During his time with the Lynx, he earned academic all-conference honors in his final two seasons.
