Western Michigan men’s basketball and head coach Steve Hawkins announced changes to the coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Assistant coach Clayton Bates has been promoted to associate head coach while Jacob Bullock has been named Interim Director of Basketball Operations and Joel Ledvina has been named Video Coordinator and Director of Scouting.

Bates has been a key cog in the program’s success since his arrival, playing a direct part in two Mid-American Conference Tournament victories, subsequent NCAA Tournament appearances, four other trips to the postseason and seven 20-win seasons for the Broncos.

“Coach Bates and I walked in to WMU together 18 years ago and he has been my rock and is just as responsible as anybody for the success that we have had,” said Hawkins. “We rely on him heavily for all aspects of the program and are very fortunate to have him as long as we have.”

Both Bullock and Ledvina were graduate assistants for the Bronco men’s basketball program last season and will obtain new roles in 2018. This offseason, WMU has also added two assistant coaches in Glen “Red” Heffernan and Thomas Kelley.
