Islanders men’s basketball head coach Willis Wilson announced the hiring of Byron Rimm as the program’s Director of Operations on Wednesday. Rimm spent the last 10 seasons as the head coach at Prairie View A&M.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity,” Rimm said. “It’s a blessing to be working with Coach Wilson and his incredible staff. I am elated to have this opportunity to further my coaching career and learn from one of the best.”
In this role, Rimm will handle a majority of the administrative tasks for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men’s basketball program, including team travel, community service and the Islanders Summer Basketball Camps.
“We are incredibly excited to add Byron Rimm to our staff,” Wilson said. “Someone with his basketball knowledge, experience and character will be an invaluable asset to our student-athletes.”
Rimm was on staff at Prairie View A&M for 11 years, starting as an assistant coach for the 2005-06 season. While head coach of the Panthers, Rimm led his team to consecutive SWAC Tournaments for the first time since 2002 and continued to bring his team back to the conference tournament year after year.
In 2013 Rimm led the Panthers to the SWAC Championship game for the first time since 1998 and then brought them back to the finals in 2014.
Rimm’s teams also excelled in the classroom. In 2014 Prairie View A&M held the highest APR ranking among SWAC teams and its score was the best in program history.
Rimm played at Ventura College and Cal State, Los Angeles before beginning his coaching career at Pasadena City College. He also had stints at Chaffey Community College and Cal State San Bernardino before becoming the head women’s basketball coach at Texas College. Rimm’s final stop before heading to Prairie View was as the head coach of Jarvis Christian.
Rimm graduated from Cal State Los Angeles in 1999 and earned his master’s degree from American InterContinental University in 2005.
