Xavier University announced a contract extension for Sedler Family Men’s Basketball Head Coach Sean Miller, adding two years to the previous deal. The new contract runs through the 2028-29 season.
“I appreciate the support of (Xavier University President) Dr. (Colleen) Hanycz, Greg Christopher, and the Xavier community for our program and our coaching staff,” said Miller. “We are proud of the season we had last year and even more excited about the future. Xavier’s tradition and the BIG EAST Conference have always held special places in my heart. We are competing in the best league and on the biggest stage in college basketball. We have a big challenge ahead but there is no place where I would rather be.”
Miller returned to Xavier in 2022 after 12 seasons (2009-21) as the head coach at Arizona. His first season back he led Xavier to one of the top five winningest seasons in school history at 27-10, tied the school record for BIG EAST wins in a season at 15-5 and led the Musketeers back to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Miller has now taken Xavier to at least the Sweet 16 in each of his last three seasons as the Xavier head coach (2023 Sweet 16, 2009 Sweet 16 and 2008 Elite Eight). Miller was the Xavier head coach previously for five seasons from 2004-09 and XU has now made the NCAA Tournament in five of his six years as the XU head coach.
“There is no doubt Xavier Basketball is headed in the right direction,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Greg Christopher. “When we brought Sean back to Cincinnati, I was confident he was best positioned to lead our program. The success we enjoyed last year – including recruiting, player development and reaching the Sweet 16 – demonstrates Sean was the right person for the Xavier program. This extension reinforces that message. Sean is an elite college basketball coach and a proven winner who understands the expectations, traditions and values of Xavier and the BIG EAST Conference. The future is bright under his leadership.”
Miller holds a 147-57 (.721) mark in six seasons leading Xavier. His 147 wins at XU rank him fourth on Xavier’s all-time wins list. The late Skip Prosser is third with 148 wins in seven seasons from 1994-01.
