#500 For JCSU’s Stephen Joyner, Sr.

After only leading by five points at halftime, the Johnson C. Smith University men’s basketball team had a big second half and cruised past visiting Apprentice School, 104-88 and gave head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. his 500th win at the helm of the JCSU program in game two of the JCSU/Claude Saunders Tip-Off Classic.

Throughout his tenure as coach, Joyner has collected numerous accomplishments during his career. Joyner is the winningest men’s basketball coach in Golden Bulls history, having recorded over 425 victories. He led the Golden Bulls to the CIAA Western Division Title in 1992, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. In 2000, his team finished fourth in the CIAA, third place finishes in 1991, 1993 and 2003, second place finishes in 1992, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Coach Joyner has captured the CIAA Tournament Championship in 2001, 2008, and 2009. He was selected as the CIAA Coach of the Year and (1992, 1997, 2001) and NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2001.

He joins Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (1,021), North Carolina’s Roy Williams (752) and Western Carolina’s Larry Hunter (664) as the only four active coaches in North Carolina with 500 wins.
