Back on February 8th, legendary Oak Hill Academy (VA) head coach Steve Smith announced his retirement at the conclusion of this season. After weeks of speculation as to who his replacement would be, the choice has now been made known.
Former Oak Hill assistant coach Yerrick Stoneman confirmed to The State today that he will be Smith’s replacement. Stoneman had spent 11-seasons as Smith’s assistant before taking over at Galax HS (VA), and most recently Ridge View HS (SC).
Stoneman told The State, “I didn’t have to think twice about it because coach Smith called me and told me he would like for me to take over. If he has the confidence in me to do it, I think I can get the job done. I’m never going to replace him. You aren’t to replace someone who has done that for so long and done it so well.”
During his tenure at Ridge View, Stoneman compiled a 114-44 mark, including going 18-2 in the playoffs. His squad won a region championship every year since his arrival and won three straight Class 4A state championships from 2018-20.
He will have big shoes to fill at Oak Hill, as Smith’s teams have won nine National Championships, and he is a three-time recipient of the Naismith High School Coach of the Year award. Smith has coached more than 250 Division 1 players and 34 McDonald’s All Americans, as well as numerous NBA All-Stars, NBA and NCAA champions, and Olympic gold medalists.
According to the report, and official announcement by Oak Hill is imminent.
