Following up on some DIRT from last night. Wheeling Jesuit University has released the following statement on the resignation of head basketball coach John Peckinpaugh:
Citing family and personal reasons, John Peckinpaugh will resign as the head men’s basketball coach at Wheeling Jesuit University.
Peckinpaugh has accepted a coaching job at Noblesville High School in his home state of Indiana to be closer to his parents who both have personal health issues that they are currently dealing with.
“I love Wheeling Jesuit,” Peckinpaugh said. “But at this time, I need to be with my family. WJU holds a special place in my heart and I will miss all the students and staff that I have had the opportunity to work with. Whoever comes in is going to have a good foundation to build the program.”
In his lone season as head coach of the Cardinals he posted a 9-21 record. The team went 7-4 in the final 11 games of the season and made an appearance in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament Quarterfinals.
“We appreciate all of John’s time and effort he poured into the men’s basketball program during this past season,” Director of Athletics Rudy Yovich said. “We’re obviously disappointed to lose a coach like John, but we understand his situation. We wish him and his family all the best and are thankful for the great job he has done with the team.”
A search for the new Wheeling Jesuit head men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
