Head Men’s Basketball Coach Brad Franz has announced the hiring of his new assistant, Jason Hinson who will help lead the team in the upcoming 2016-17 season.
“We are very happy to have Jason join our basketball program,” Franz said. “I’ve known Jason for some time and he has worked and played for excellent coaches in the programs he comes from. He is an excellent coach on the floor, works very well with student-athletes on and off the court, is a proven recruiter and overall is the total package in a coach. I know he will do a tremendous job with us.”
Hinson comes to Northwestern from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa where he spent three seasons as the head assistant for the Men’s Basketball program.
As the assistant for the Mavericks, Hinson had many responsibilities including recruiting, scouting opponents, oversaw strength and conditioning and was also a key contributor in overall player development.
He is also very accomplished in terms of coaching as he successfully recruited and developed 18 graduating student-athletes to seven NCAA DI, six NCAA DII and five to NAIA institutions. The Mavs have also been very successful as a team, averaging 20 wins per season over the last three seasons at the NJCAA DI level.
In the 2015-16 season, NOC-Tonkawa went 26-7 and earned a national ranking as well as finishing runner-up in Region II.
Before his time at Northern, Hinson spent four years at MOKAN/Nike EYBL in Overland Park, Kan. where he worked with youth of all ages to develop skills and general basketball knowledge. While working with the youth he was the head coach of various tournament teams of all age groups.
Prior to joining on with MOKAN, he was an assistant at St. James Academy in Lenexa, Kan. where he helped with daily practice and game planning as well as worked with the student-athletes in strength and conditioning.
Hinson has not only been a quality coach, but also a standout player and took his talents to Allen County Community College after a successful high school campaign at Olathe North where he was All Sunflower League and an All-County selection in his senior season.
At Allen he was a two-year starter and led the Jayhawk Conference in steals during his final year at Allen. Following his stint at ACCC, he finished up his career at Sterling College after a brief time at William Penn University. Hinson was also an All-Conference player and led his team from last to second in conference in just a season. He was also named team captain his final season in a Warriors uniform.
Hinson completed his Bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies in 2013 and his Master’s in Performance Improvement in 2015, both from Grantham University.
