Dorian Long has been promoted to assistant coach in the Marist men’s basketball program, it was announced by head coach John Dunne on Thursday.
“My time here has been a great experience specifically because of my relationships with the staff and players,” Long said. “We’ve brought in great guys and I’m extremely excited about the future of the program. I want to thank Coach Dunne for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to continuing to help build the Red Fox program.”
Long will be entering his fourth season with the Red Foxes in 2021-22. His responsibilities as an assistant coach will include on-the-floor coaching, on- and off-campus recruiting, scouting, and involvement with all aspects of the program.
He was hired in 2018 as the program’s director of operations, and had worked in that role the previous three seasons. His responsibilities included coordinating travel, monitoring all budget and equipment operations, on-campus recruiting, analyzing video and statistics, and overseeing all program logistics. In his first season, Long’s work with logistics included the first international tournament in program history, as the Red Foxes won the Samson Bracket of the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic in Northern Ireland.
Last year, Long served as an advisor to Marist’s Black Student Athlete Alliance, was a member of Marist’s IDEA Committee, and took on additional responsibilities within the program due to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Red Foxes went 12-9 overall and 10-8 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play in the 2020-21 season. It was the Red Foxes’ best record in 13 years.
“I’m happy to promote Dorian to an assistant coach position,” Dunne said. “He did an outstanding job for us in his previous role as director of basketball operations. He has helped us tremendously with his work ethic, detailed approach, and player relationships. We are confident he will do an excellent job in his new role.”
Prior to his arrival at Marist, Long coached on the staff of former NBA player Doug Overton at Lincoln University, where he was elevated to associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. He served as director of basketball operations at James Madison University for two years, and was assistant coach at Washington College for two years prior to that. He started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Neumann University, where he worked from 2008-12.
Marist will be heading into its fourth season under Dunne’s leadership in 2021-22.
