Byrne Named Assistant Coach at NYIT

Mike Byrne joined the New York Tech men’s basketball coaching staff in September 2019.

He previously served as an assistant coach for two seasons at Rutgers-Newark. There, he developed three 1,000-point scorers and contributed to a doubling of the win total and ECAC championship final berth.

Byrne played prep basketball at Bergen Catholic High School and Wood-Ridge High School in New Jersey. He played collegiately for Bergen Community Community College and Farmingdale State.

He then served as head assistant varsity coach at Bergen Catholic High School for three years before taking over as JV coach, where he led his team to a 23-3 record. There, he mentored players who went on to play at Division I programs including Kentucky, Xavier, Fairfield, Columbia, George Washington, Quinnipiac, Boston University, St. Joseph’s and Eastern Michigan, with others committed to receiving offers to programs including Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Butler, Brown and Princeton.

In 2016, Byrne was appointed the associate head coach for the Dwight-Englewood High School Bulldogs. He helped that team to its best season in school history, going 24-5 before losing in the state sectional semifinals to eventual-state champion Hudson Catholic. In his lone season there, his players went on to play collegiately at Wichita State, Merrimack, Hunter College, Sarah Lawrence and Stevens.

Byrne has worked several Hoop Group events such as Hoop Group Elite, Future All-American, Philly and Metro Top 100s as well as the NJ Elite Exposure Tour. The New Jersey native also has served as head trainer/clinician for the Hoop Dreamz AAU program since 2010. He worked with several pros as well as more than 50 Division I players and countless other Division II and III student-athletes.
