The San Diego Christian College athletic department has announced the promotion of Dwayne Cosby to the SDC head men’s basketball coach, effective immediately.
Cosby was the interim head coach for the 2018-19 season before being promoted after the season by Carolyn Peters, the SDC athletic director.
“SDC is blessed to have Coach Cosby join our staff officially,” Peters said. “His experience and love for Christ will continue to impact our institution, department and basketball program. The passion, skill, and energy this past season brought more engaged fans and competitiveness in the GSAC. I look forward to working with Coach Cosby as we continue to strive for excellence.”
Cosby is in his second stint with SDC and has been the assistant coach for the last two seasons under Mendez, from 2016-18. Cosby was the assistant coach at SDC from 2010-12 before heading to Point Loma, where he was the assistant for the Sea Lions women’s basketball team from 2013-15.
“This is an opportunity of a lifetime. It so surreal,” Cosby said. “I am happy to be a part of the movement and the direction this athletic department is going. I would like to thank CP and Dr. Ague with the potential they see in me to be the next head coach of this program.”
Before heading to SDC, he coached at Cal Baptist from 2005-07. From 2001-05, Cosby was an assistant at La Sierra. His first coaching experience came a couple years after his playing career was over at Riverside Community College for just the 1999-2000 season.
The Hawks finished with an overall record of 9-18 and 5-13 in conference. The five conference wins were the most since the 2011-12 season.
