North Park University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Edwind McGhee has accepted an assistant coaching position at an NCAA Division I institution, concluding a successful four-year tenure with the Vikings.
“I would like to thank Coach Edwind McGhee for his leadership, commitment, and service to North Park Men’s Basketball,” said Director of Athletics John Born. “Ed helped elevate our program both on and off the court and played a key role in one of the most successful stretches in recent program history. His impact on our student-athletes and our athletic department has been tremendous. While we will certainly miss him, we are excited for this opportunity and wish him and his family the very best.”
McGhee joined North Park in 2022 as Associate Head Coach and was promoted to Head Coach on April 19, 2024. During his tenure, the Vikings enjoyed sustained success within the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW), including consecutive top four conference finishes and back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2016-17. Under his leadership, North Park qualified for the CCIW Tournament in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.
The 2025-26 campaign saw continued growth as North Park advanced to the CCIW Tournament semifinals and established numerous offensive records, including program marks for most three-pointers made in a season (246), most assists in a game (39), and most points scored in a single game (138). The Vikings averaged 85.7 points per game, their highest scoring average since the 1987-88 season.
“North Park has been an incredibly special place for me and my wife, and we are truly grateful for the last four years and the relationships we’ve built along the way,” said McGhee. “I want to thank our administration, coaches, student-athletes, alumni, and supporters for believing in me and allowing me to grow both personally and professionally. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of a CCIW Tournament Championship and NCAA Sweet Sixteen run as an assistant coach, and later to help lead the program through one of the most successful stretches in recent program history as head coach. While we’re excited for this next opportunity, my wife and I will always be thankful for our time at North Park and will continue cheering on the Vikings!
A national search for new leadership will begin promptly as North Park works to identify the next head coach to guide the program forward. All inquiries should be directed to AD John Born.
