It’s May…we don’t sleep around here. A few things that I’ve heard to kick-off the month…
Following-up on the FDU DIRT from earlier this am. I have heard that Tobin Anderson will bring his entire staff from St. Thomas Aquinas with him to FDU. This means the STAC job will be posted – this is a very good D2 gig. **UPDATE: This has changed – STAC will promote associate head coach Matthew Cappell – more HERE**
Speaking of FDU…it sounds like Richmond assistant Maurice Joseph was the other finalist (and reportedly passed on the job). The former head coach at George Washington (2016-19) was an assistant at FDU during the 2019-20 season. It sounds like he is still involved in the vacant assistant position at Michigan State. More on this one as I hear it.
Some staff changes at Southern Mississippi…assistant coach Anthony Winchester has departed for Kansas State, and I have heard that Clarence Weatherspoon is also out (not sure where he may be headed). Names that I have heard as possible replacements include Nick Williams – current assistant at Northwest Mississippi CC (former player and GA at Ole Miss), and former Mercer assistant Juan Cardona. More on these moves when they become official.
Kavon Lacey has been promoted to interim head coach at JUCO Lewis & Clark Community College. Lacey, a former player and assistant coach at Evansville, has been an assistant at LCCC for the past four seasons. He will replaced long-time head coach and AD Doug Stotler who is officially retiring on 6/1.
I have heard that the leader to replace Dickey Nutt as the head coach at JUCO Gaston College (NC) is current associate head coach Jamie Rosser. The former Arkansas State point guard also served as an assistant to Nutt at Southeast Missouri State. An official announcement here is expected shortly.
Hawaii Pacific assistant coach Ray Johnson is on the move, and will be named as an assistant at the University of Ft Lauderdale. Johnson had been at HPU for the past two seasons, and has also been an assistant coach at NAIA Indiana University Southeast, and D2 Augusta University.
Interviews are currently underway at JUCO Dodge City CC in the hunt to replace Jake Williams (Milwaukee). Working on the list now. I’ve also heard that D2 St Cloud State and D3 Springfield College have both narrowed it down – will get names on those shortly as well.
Following-up on my tease of a tweet on Friday…still hearing a Midwest D3 has/will open. Hint: Buckeye State. UPDATE: **Here it is…D3 DIRT.**
