Daily News & Notes – 2/1/21

Today’s News & Notes from around the college basketball coaching world…

Mixed messages from Kansas State AD Gene Taylor this weekend on the future of head coach Bruce Weber. Taylor told The Mercury on Saturday that “our intention” is for Weber to return next season. However, when speaking with Wichita Eagle on Sunday, Taylor said. “There is still a lot of basketball left to play. The players are going to continue to work hard and the players are going to continue to work hard. I always evaluate all the way through. I don’t stop evaluating. Let’s see how we finish the season and go from there.” K-State is currently 5-13 (1-8 Big 12), and riding an 8-game losing steak. We’ll keep an eye on this situation.

According to Boston College head coach Jim Christian, he will have only four scholarship players available for tomorrow’s game vs Florida State. “Our athletic administration’s interpretation is eight healthy bodies. So if you look at our roster size with five scout-team players, we have enough guys to play.” Kamari Williams, Jay Heath, Steffon Mitchell and CJ Felder will be the only available players on the roster that will be joined by walk-on graduate student Andrew Kenny in the starting lineup. Texas head coach Shaka Smart had “significant” COVID-19 symptoms according to an ESPN report today. “This was not a walk in the park for me, not saying it has been for anyone else. When you go through that kind of stuff, it certainly swirls some things around your mind.” More HERE.

Michigan head coach Juwan Howard threw his support behind Michigan winter high schools sports to return with this TWEET. He followed the lead of Oakland head coach Greg Kampe who sent a similar TWEET last week.

Louisiana head coach Bob Marlin, who tested positive last week, is expected to return to practice Wednesday and should be ready to coach this weekend. The announcement was made by UL DBO Mike Murphy in a Zoom conference, and TWEETED by The Daily Advertiser’s Tim Buckley.

Yale head coach James Jones has been named an assistant coach for the USA Basketball AmeriCup Qualifying team that is set to play two games in February. Former NBA coach Joe Prunty will serve as head coach, while Othella Harrington will join Jones as an assistant coach. Jones has prior experience with USA Basketball, serving as an assistant coach for the 2007 USA Basketball Men’s Pan American Games Team and as a court coach for the 2006 USA Men’s U18 National Team Trials.
