Freeman resigns at NAIA Corban U.

The Corban University athletic department announced on Thursday morning that Mitch Freeman has resigned from his role as head men’s basketball coach. Freeman has accepted a position that will allow him to live closer to his family in Washington.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Mitch for his partnership in fulfilling the mission of Corban University,” said Interim Athletic Director Sue Roth. “As the head coach for men’s basketball over the past two years, Mitch’s passion to mentor and disciple his team was always at the forefront. Mitch is a class act and a great coach, and we wish him all the best as he pursues a new job opportunity closer to family.”

In two years at the helm, Freeman compiled a record of 34-27 (.557), headlined by a 21-9 campaign in 2018-19. It was the squad’s first 20-win season since 2004-05, one in which the Navy and Gold finished in a tie for third in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regular-season standings.

In addition, the program achieved its first top-25 ranking in the NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll since 2005 under Freeman’s guidance, landing at No. 24 in November of 2019.

“Corban is a special place with a mission of serving Jesus that means so much to me,” said Freeman. “I want to thank Dr. Nord, Twiggs Reed, Sue Roth, and all the staff, coaches, and trainers for making the last two years very special for my family and I. To all the players and assistants that I had the chance to build a lifelong bond with, I am forever grateful, for they are the reason I coach. I will cherish the memories that we created and all the success we had on and off the court. My love for them is profound, and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity to be a part of their lives.”
