Hampton University Men’s Basketball Coach Matthew Hamilton has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. Hamilton will also continue in his role as the recruiting coordinator.
Hamilton is entering his eighth season with the Pirates men’s basketball program under the leadership of Head Coach Edward Joyner Jr.
“I’m extremely honored to receive this promotion by Coach Joyner and to be able to continue as a part of the Hampton University family,” said Hamilton. “Working alongside a coach, leader, and friend like Coach Joyner has been a blessing on my young coaching career. There’s a lot of work to be done, but great things are ahead for the Pirates. I look forward to witnessing the growth of this program and our student-athletes both on and off the court.”
The Waxhaw, NC native began pursuing a career in coaching at 16 years old. He worked his way up from a high school assistant coach and college student manager at his alma mater Appalachian State before becoming an assistant coach at Lees-McRae College.
Coach Hamilton joined the Pirates as the Director of Basketball Operations and has been promoted twice based on performance.
Hamilton served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the past five seasons.
He has become increasingly involved with every aspect of the men’s basketball program. Coach Matt looks to keep the momentum rolling as the Pirates enter a new era in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Hamilton has been instrumental in executing the day-to-day operations, student-athlete relationships, player development, recruiting, and ensuring academic success.
“Coach Hamilton has grown tremendously with this program for the past several years, positioning himself as an asset to my coaching staff and the future of this program,” said Joyner. “This promotion is a testament to his hard work and character. Iron sharpens iron.
