Following a remarkable season where he played a crucial role in maintaining Nelson University’s men’s basketball team as one of the top programs in the NAIA, Mitch McMullen has been promoted to associate head coach. This exciting announcement was made by head coach Delton Deal, marking a new chapter in McMullen’s coaching career.
“It’s truly an honor,” McMullen expressed. “My job as an associate head coach is to make sure that I make Coach Deal’s job easier. Also, my job is just to continue the success that the Nelson men’s basketball program has had in the past.”
McMullen’s contribution to the Lions was significant in the past season, serving as an assistant coach and helping the team achieve a 20-10 cumulative record and an appearance in the NAIA national championship tournament.
Reflecting on his time at Nelson, McMullen said, “Honestly, just learning from Coach Deal – seeing his work ethic, how he operates as a coach, father, and friend – it makes me believe that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.”
He also praised the quality of the players in the program, stating, “The guys that I’ve been able to help coach and mentor make my job a whole lot easier.”
Before his tenure at Nelson, McMullen spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Temple College and also assisted at Fort Scott. As a player at Nelson, he was named to the Sooner Athletic Conference All-Tournament team in his senior year, underscoring his deep-rooted connection to the university.
“I feel like Mitch was meant to be here,” Deal said. “I firmly believe God had a plan for him and for us to work together. I’m incredibly thankful for the time we’ve been able to share.”
The Nelson University community is excited about McMullen’s new role and looks forward to the continued success and growth of the men’s basketball program under his and Coach Deal’s leadership.
