NWF released the following statement earlier today announcing the hiring:

Joseph “Butch” Pierre, an NCAA Division I veteran assistant coach, has been named the next head men’s basketball coach at Northwest Florida State College, Athletic Director Ramsey Ross announced Tuesday afternoon.

“Northwest Florida State College is extremely fortunate to secure Butch Pierre as our next head men’s basketball coach,” said Ross. “Coach Pierre has a wealth of experience at the highest levels of college basketball and is widely considered to be among the most dynamic recruiters in the entire country. I’m most excited about the fact he will be an excellent leader and mentor for the young men in our program and will represent our college in a first-class manner. I have the upmost confidence Coach Pierre will continue to build upon the rich tradition of our program and have our men’s basketball team consistently competing at a championship-level.”

Pierre began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State University in 1986. He has since then accumulated over 30 years of extensive experience and knowledge in the intricacies of running a successful men’s basketball program. During his career, Pierre has established himself as one of the premier recruiters and coaches in the country, having recruited some of the top recruiting classes in college basketball. These classes have yielded nine conference championships, 12 NCAA Tournament (including a Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, and Final Four appearance), and three NIT appearances.

“Coach Pierre is a well-respected veteran and leader of integrity in the world of college basketball,” said Dr. Devin Stephenson, NWF president. “We are looking forward to him advancing our program and continuing the excellent tradition of athletic performance, academic achievement and community service. After all, The Best is Our Standard!”

Most recently, Pierre served as the Director of Player Development at the University of Memphis, under future Hall of Fame Coach Tubby Smith.

“Butch Pierre is an absolute perfect fit for Northwest Florida,” said Kermit Davis, Ole Miss head men’s basketball coach. “(He is) one of the most organized, relentless workers in all of college basketball! Butch has been a part of numerous NCAA tournament and championship teams! Not only an outstanding recruiter, I worked alongside Butch for five years at LSU and witnessed first-hand an outstanding on-the-floor coach!”

Pierre received both his undergraduate (1984) and master’s degrees (1986) in education from Mississippi State University, where he was a four-year starter at point guard for the Bulldogs. A native of Darrow, Louisiana, Pierre and his wife, Clemmie, have three children together – daughter, Langley, and twin sons, Josh and Joseph Pierre III.
