Otzelberger adds Weathers to South Dakota State coaching staff

South Dakota State University’s men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger announced Tuesday the addition of Curtis Weathers as assistant coach.

“I am ecstatic to announce the addition of Curtis Weathers to our coaching staff,” Otzelberger said. “My relationship with Curtis goes back more than 20 years, and I’ve always had tremendous respect for his ability to connect, motivate and develop student-athletes.

“His specific strength in skill development will pay huge dividends for the young men in our program. We look forward to his impact on our program both on and off the court.”

Weathers brings over 30 years of player development and coaching experience into the role, most recently as the Chief of Operations at Arete Sports. He also founded the Terry Porter (TP) Elite and Stay in the Game, youth development organizations.

Arete Sports is a Philadelphia based sports management agency which represents NBA and international basketball players where Weathers was responsible for scouting, evaluating, recruiting, pre-draft training, player development and client management. He served as the Program Director for TP Elite, a grass roots youth basketball program, run in collaboration with the Mary Ryan Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee that featured the top high school boys players in Milwaukee. Weathers was also President of Stay in the Game, a Milwaukee based non-profit youth academic support, player development and mentoring program, established to guide at-risk students that aspired to be college student athletes.

As a Skills Enhancement Trainer and Player Development Coach, Weathers has worked extensively with 11 former NBA players, and many international, collegiate and elite high school athletes.

“I’ve wanted to coach collegiately for 20 years, and the opportunity to join a program with a winning tradition is exciting and a lifelong dream,” Weathers said. “I’ve known Coach Otzelberger a very long time and love his energy, his enthusiasm, his commitment to excellence and his passion for the game. I plan to bring that same level of commitment and excitement everyday while working in this program.”

In addition to coaching, Weathers has worked at Concordia University of Mequon, WI, as the Program Director of “Design Your Future”. He also worked for 15 years at Metavante, a financial services company in various management roles within the IT department.

Weathers graduated from Marquette University in 1986 with a degree in Interpersonal Communications.
