Placeres resigns as Head Coach at D3 Maryville, will become D1 assistant

D3 Maryville College released the following statement on the resignation of head men’ basketball coach Raul Placeres. The veteran head coach is set to join Tobin Anderson’s new staff at Tennessee Tech:

Maryville College Head Men’s Basketball coach Raul Placeres has announced he is stepping down from his position to pursue an assistant coaching opportunity at the Division I level.

A proud Maryville Alumnus, Placeres ’06 has been an integral part of the Scots men’s basketball program for more than a decade, helping shape one of the most successful eras in program history. He returned to his alma mater in 2011 as associate head coach under Wall of Famer Randy Lambert and played a key role in the program’s continued success before being named head coach in 2019.

“Maryville College Basketball will always be a part of me, and I will always be rooting for you, supporting you, and carrying these memories with me wherever I go,” said Coach Raul Placeres.

Since taking over, Placeres has elevated the Scots to new heights, building a program defined by consistency, competitiveness, and a championship standard. Over the last six seasons, he has compiled an impressive 121-47 overall record, including a 53-22 mark inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium, and an astounding 70-18 mark in conference play.

“We’re proud to celebrate Coach Placeres’ tenure as an incredible leader of our men’s basketball program and our student-athletes,” said Dr. Andrew Wu, Director of Athletics. “He is a fantastic coach, mentor, colleague, and friend. We will miss him in the office every day, but I’m looking forward to continuing to work together in his role as a proud alum and advocate of Maryville College athletes.”

Placeres reiterated the notion of working together, stating, “Looking forward to working jointly with Dr. Wu and the advancement of our athletic program”.

Under Placeres’ leadership, Maryville established itself as a dominant force in conference play, capturing six consecutive regular-season titles and consistently competing among the top teams in the region. His teams were recognized on the national stage as well, reaching the highest ranking in program history at No. 11 during the 2021-22 campaign.

Placeres’ success has been reflected in both team accomplishments and individual honors. He was named CCS Coach of the Year three times during his tenure, while mentoring a host of standout student-athletes who earned All-America, All-Region, and All-Conference recognition. His ability to develop talent and maximize potential became a staple of the program he has built, as players thrived both on the court and in the classroom.

In addition to sustained excellence, Placeres reached milestones at a historic pace. He became the fastest head coach in program history to reach 100 career victories, a testament to the culture and consistency he has built with his teams year after year.

Placeres’ departure marks the conclusion of a remarkable chapter for Maryville’s men’s basketball – one defined by sustained success, championship performances, and a lasting standard of excellence. His contributions leave the program well-positioned for continued success as it transitions into a new era.

“This opportunity to move on came sooner than expected, but I truly believe in God’s timing,” Placeres stated. “I love this program, I love this community, and I love you all.”

The search for the next leader of the prestigious Scots men’s basketball program has already begun.

Wu continued, “This will be a fast and extremely competitive search process and I am excited to work towards identifying our next head coach, who will be just our third head coach since 1980, and who will lead the program into a new challenge in the SAA.”

The incoming head coach will guide the program into its next phase of competition as a member of the Southern Athletic Association, building upon the strong foundation established over the past decade.
