Southern Miss men’s basketball head coach Doc Sadler announced the hiring of Caleb Villarreal as a new video coordinator and Jake Stoffers as a new graduate assistant.

“Caleb was someone we leaned on during our first year at Southern Miss,” Sadler said. “He is an extremely hard worker and has shown us his ability to help develop our players on and off the court. In his new role as video coordinator, Caleb will be able to assist our program in all aspects including scouting, cutting up film and developing a game plan. We are very fortunate to have Caleb on our staff.”

Villarreal spent three seasons as a student-manager for Texas Tech. During his time he worked for three head coaches — Billy Gillispie, Chris Walker and Tubby Smith. While at Texas Tech, Villarreal assisted the program with recruiting visits, film and video breakdown, as well as coordinated many office projects. He earned his bachelor’s in exercise sports science from Texas Tech in May 2014.

“I had the opportunity to work with Jake two years ago at Iowa State,” said Sadler. “His knowledge and passion for college basketball made him a clear choice to bring on as a graduate assistant. I saw how he worked with the coaching staff and players; the amount of responsibility they entrusted him with spoke to his character and commitment as a head manager. That showed me he would be a valuable addition to our coaching staff and program.”

Stoffers spent four years as a student-manager for Iowa State under head coach Fred Hoiberg. During those four years, Iowa State compiled a record of 90-47 which included three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, a Sweet 16 appearance and a Big 12 Tournament Title. While at ISU, Stoffers worked closely with the coaching staff and was involved with many aspects of the program. Some of his responsibilities included helping with recruiting visits and team travel arrangements, film and video breakdown, as well as assisting the coaching staff with special projects. He earned his bachelor’s in speech communication from Iowa State in July 2015.
