Jared Swanson has been promoted from director of operations to assistant coach, fourth-year Ohio men’s basketball head coach Saul Phillips announced on Monday (June 26).
“Jared is one of the most thorough and professional people that I’ve run across in this business,” said Phillips. “He’s ready for this and has been grooming himself for this opportunity for some time now. I fully expect him to do great things in this position.”
During Swanson’s time in Athens under Phillips, Ohio has won 53 games, reached the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals each of the past two seasons and advanced to the semifinals of the 2016 College Basketball Invitational.
“I want to thank Coach Phillips for his confidence in me and for giving me this opportunity,” said Swanson. “I have learned a great deal from Coach Phillips and the other coaches over the past few years, and I appreciate everything they have done for me. I am really looking forward to working with our student-athletes in a different capacity and helping our program continue to grow.”
Swanson has spent the previous three years as director of operations for the Bobcats, a role in which he managed all day-to-day men’s basketball operations, handled the program’s budget, all aspects of team and recruiting travel, academic development and game scheduling. Swanson also served as director of Bobcats Summer Basketball Camps.
Swanson served in the same role at San Jose State during the 2013-14 season after spending the previous two campaigns under Phillips at North Dakota State (2011-13). During the 2010-11 season, Swanson was the graduate assistant for the men’s basketball program at Boise State.
Swanson played professional basketball for four seasons in Australia for Warrnambool, Shepparton and Southern Peninsula from 2005-08. He was a two-time league most valuable player and three-time all-star.
A native of Morris, Minn., Swanson played two seasons (1998-00) at Minnesota State Community and Technical College (Fergus Falls) where he was an all-state and all-region pick. He then played at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., from 2001-03, where he was a first team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree.
Swanson earned a bachelor’s degree in social studies education from Concordia College in 2003 and a master’s degree in athletic administration from Idaho State in ’11. He and his wife, Jessica, are the parents of two sons, Jett and Nash, and a daughter, Luna.
Ohio is coming off a 20-11 (11-7 MAC) 2016-17 season in which it recorded 20 overall wins for the second year in a row and achieved a second-straight 11-win conference campaign. The Bobcats locked down the No. 2 seed in the 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament presented by VisitMyrtleBeach.com for the second year in a row, earning a bye to the quarterfinals. Ohio topped No. 7-seeded Toledo in the quarters, 67-66, before falling to No. 6-seed and eventual tournament champion Kent State, 68-66, in the league semifinals.
