Daily News & Notes – 1/14/21

Catching up on a few days worth of news and notes from through out the college basketball coaching world…

  • Great article from The Wichita Eagle on how interim head coach Isaac Brown has guided Wichita State basketball through adversity to success. While Brown might not have changed since being promoted from assistant coach, his greatest success so far has been winning over his locker room. More HERE.

  • Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway gave an update to the Memphis Commercial Appeal on the interview phase of the program’s pending NCAA infractions case (surrounding James Wiseman’s eligibility).  Hardaway said: “At least we have all the interviews out of the way and that (part of the) process is over,” Hardaway said. “I think the latest interviews ended like a month-and-a-half ago – maybe a month ago. So, the rest is on them. We know they have to do their due diligence and turn over every stone to make sure nothing crazy happened or whatever.” More HERE.

  • Good news regarding the health of former BYU head coach Dave Rose, who was hospitalized a few weeks ago after suffering a stroke. Rose will be released from Utah Valley Hospital to begin outpatient therapy, his wife Cheryl told KSL TV. More HERE.

  • We’ve been following the trend this season of coaches dumping their suits for golf shirts. Kansas head coach Bill Self has now weighed in on the matter telling KUSports.com, “I actually like it, I doubt I go back. Our world is a lot more casual today than it was even 15 or 20 years ago. Even when you go to church, you dress differently than you did when we were growing up.” More HERE.

  • Radford learned Wednesday afternoon that a men’s basketball staff member tested positive. The team is undergoing contact tracing to determine if anyone must quarantine. More HERE.

  • A good week for Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard…Saturday’s win at Iowa State was #200 of his NCAA coaching career. He’s now 200-77 (72.2%) combined at McMurry (19-10), Angelo State (47-15), Little Rock (30-5) and Texas Tech (104-47). Also, last night’s win at #4 Texas was the first-ever road win vs. a Top 5 team in program history.

  • Northern Illinois interim head coach Lamar Chapman earned his first D1 win on Tuesday night in dramatic fashion, as NIU hit a jumper with one second left in regulation to secure a 67-65 victory. The game was Chapman’s third as the interim head coach, after taking over for Mark Montgomery back on 1/3.

  • Former UConn head coach Dee Rowe passed away at the age of 91. Rowe coached the Huskies for eight seasons, compiling a 120-88 record as he guided the team twice to the National Invitational Tournament and once to the N.C.A.A. men’s tournament, in 1976. According to The New York Times, the cause of death was Covid-19, but that he had also received a diagnosis of Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. More HERE.
