Mattox Promoted to DBO at Morehead State

Jonathan Mattox, who has spent the past two seasons as a graduate manager for Morehead State men’s basketball, has been promoted to a full-time director of operations.  He will continue to handle a variety of behind-the-scenes tasks and administrative duties for the Eagles.

“Jonathan has done a terrific job the past two seasons, and we’re looking forward to working with him in this new role,” Head Coach Sean Woods said.  “Jonathan works really hard and does anything he can to make our program better.  He is detailed oriented and thorough in everything he does.”

Mattox will coordinate team travel, including buses, flights, hotels and meals.  He will also be involved with academics monitoring, on-campus recruiting, film exchange and general video operations.  In addition, Mattox will coordinate a variety of men’s basketball camps the Eagles host each year.

“We’re lucky to have someone like Jonathan on our staff,” Woods said.  “He is respected by our players, coaches, support staff and athletic administrators.  You can tell Jonathan wants to be in this profession moving forward.  He’s done a lot for the program and earned this promotion on our staff.”

Morehead State tallied 37 wins and 20 Ohio Valley Conference victories in Mattox’s two seasons as a graduate manager.  The Eagles participated in the league tournament both years.  In 2013-14, MSU reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth time and postseason play for the ninth time in school history.

“I want to thank Coach Woods and everyone else who was involved with this decision,” Mattox said.  “I really enjoy working with our players, coaches, support staff and athletic administrators.  I think the future is bright for Morehead State men’s basketball, and I’m excited to be a small part of that.”

Mattox helped NAIA school Emmanuel (Ga.) to a 49-21 record in two years as an assistant men’s basketball coach from 2011-13.  He assisted with on-court coaching, player development, scouting and recruiting for the Lions.

Mattox started his playing career at Division II member Anderson (S.C.) and finished at Emmanuel.  As a senior, he helped the Lions to a 26-8 overall record and Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament championship.

Mattox earned four letters in basketball at Oconee County High School (Ga.).  As a senior, he helped the Warriors to a Class AAA Region 8 title and berth in the Class AAA Elite Eight.  He notched Second-Team All-Northeast Georgia honors his final two years.

Mattox earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Emmanuel in 2011 and master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia (Calif.) in 2013.  He is pursuing a second master’s degree, in sport management, at Morehead State.

“I am excited about the opportunity to continue at MSU,” Mattox added.  “This position is a big step in my coaching journey.  I love being involved with the game and have a passion for what I do.  I expect the transition to be smooth since I’m already familiar with our players, coaches, staff and university.”
