REPORT: Kevin Willard to Maryland

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

No surprise here, as this one has been making the rounds for the better part of a week, but now a little more confirmation, as CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein has reported that Maryland is “expecting to hold a press conference early this week” to introduce Seton Hall’s Kevin Willard as their new head coach.

Willard has been the head coach at Seton Hall for the past 12-seasons (225-161 – .583). His Pirates went 21-11 (11-8 Big East) this year, and were an eight seed in the NCAA Tournament. They were knocked out by TCU 69-42 this past Friday.

Willard was named as the Co-Big East Coach of the Year in 2016, and was tabbed as the MAAC COY back in 2010 when he was at Iona (he was Gael’s head coach from 2007-10).

It is expected that Willard will hire at least one, of not multiple, assistant coaches with DMV recruiting experience.

Willard if the son of former Pitt, WKU, and Holy Cross head coach Ralph Willard. The younger Willard played for his father at both WKU and Pitt.

More on this when it becomes official.
