FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY HEAD COACH ANDY BRONKEMA NAMED HOOPDIRT.COM DII COACH OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY JUST PLAY SOLUTIONS

For Immediate Release
April 12, 2018

Ferris State University (MI) Head Basketball Coach Andy Bronkema has been named as the HoopDirt.com Division II Coach of the Year presented by Just Play Solutions for the 2017-18 college basketball season. Bronkema qualified for the award by being named as the HoopDirt.com/Just Play Solutions Coach of the Week for Week 2 of the season.

Coach Bronkema’s Ferris State squad improved on their breakout 2016-2017 season by going 38-1 and taking home the NCAA DII National Championship. The Bulldogs finished out the season by winning 26 straight games, including a big victory in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game over Lake Superior State University, who had handed them their only defeat earlier in the season. Ferris State, who entered the NCAA Tournament ranked #2 in the country in the NABC Coaches Poll, then rattled off six big wins in the National Tournament, defeating 36-4 Northern State in a 71-69 thriller to win it all.

Coach Bronkema led Ferris State to a program best 28-5 record in the 2016-2017 season, and proceeded to shatter that this year, winning 10 more games than the previous season. After falling in the Round of 32 last year, the Bulldogs were able to go all the way this year, winning the program’s first ever championship and tying the NCAA DII single-season wins record with 38. Coach Bronkema has now led Ferris State to four straight GLIAC Championships and has appeared in the national tournament in all of those seasons.
