Week 5: HoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions

By AJ Nelson, HoopDirt.com staff writer

Congratulations to the following coaches who have been selected as the Week 5 HoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions. These coaches are now eligible to receive the HoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year Award presented by Just Play Solutions which will be announced at the conclusion of the 2020-21 college basketball season.

This is the sixth season that HoopDirt.com has run the Coach of the Week and Coach of the Year programs. This season’s previous weekly winners, and a list of all-time COY winners can be found following this week’s honorees.

This season will be a bit different, however. As college basketball adjusts to life with COVID, so will we. Not every level will be honored on a weekly basis – we will honor as many of the levels as possible provided enough games are played. It’s different than in the past, but we still hope to have enough weekly winners at each level to name a Coach of the Year (NCAA DI, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO) at the end of the season

To nominate coaches for future weeks, please email [email protected] with your selection(s).

The Week 5 winners are:

NCAA DI: Bryan Mullins – Southern Illinois University

Bryan Mullins With two more wins this week, including a thrilling upset, Coach Mullins’ squad is off to their best start since the 1940s. The Salukis began the week by taking on Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the Bulldogs had won 59 straight non-conference games. Southern Illinois jumped out to a 37-24 lead at the half, and held on for a stunning 76-73 victory. This marked Butler’s first non-conference home loss since 2012, ending the longest streak in the nation. The Salukis followed up this outstanding performance with a 63-57 defeat of Evansville, moving to 7-0 for the first time since the 1947-48 season. They will look to continue making history when they face off against Evansville again this evening.

NCAA DII: No week 5 winner awarded – mandatory DII winter break

NCAA DIII: No week 5 winner awarded

NAIA: Mark Svagera – Briar Cliff University

Svagera A stunning come-from-behind victory this week has pushed Coach Svagera’s Chargers back to .500 on the season. Briar Cliff took on Dakota State on the road in a non-conference matchup on Monday, and found themselves trailing 61-54 with just under 1:30 remaining in regulation. The Chargers put together a 9-2 run in the final 90 seconds to force overtime, where they were able to come away with a 79-75 win. With wins in three of their last four, Briar Cliff has improved to 7-7 on the season. They return from winter break on January 2nd, when they take on Mount Marty at home.
