HoopDirt.com 2019-20 NCAA D2 Coach of the Year presented by Just Play Solutions

For Immediate Release
April 2, 2020 – Boston, MA

Miles College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fred Watson has been named as the HoopDirt.com NCAA D2 Coach of the Year presented by Just Play Solutions for the 2019-20 college basketball season. Watson qualified for the award by being named as the HoopDirt.com/Just Play Solutions Coach of the Week for Week 14 of the season.

Coach Watson guided Miles to a 24-4 campaign this year, giving the program its first ever back-to-back 20-win seasons. The Golden Bears went 16-3 in SIAC play, and at one point had a 13-game winning streak – the longest in-season streak in school history.

On the way to the SIAC Western Division title for the second straight season, Miles was ranked as high as 19th nationally. In the SIAC championship game, the Golden Bears trailed by as many as 16 in the first half before fighting back to take a 69-56 victory over Albany State. The SIAC Tournament title was also the second consecutive for Watson’s squad. Miles was given a No. 8 seed in the National Tournament, but the season was canceled before games could be played.

Coach Watson, in his second season with Miles, was named the BOXTOROW Division II Coach of the Year on March 25. He was also honored as the SIAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career, having previously earned the award six times while head coach at Benedict College.
