WEEK 4: HoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions

Congratulations to the following coaches who have been selected as the Week 4 HoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions. These coaches are now eligible to receive the HoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year Award presented by Just Play Solutions which will be announced at the conclusion of the 2022-23 college basketball season.

This is the eighth season that HoopDirt.com has run the Coach of the Week and Coach of the Year programs. The list of 2022-23 Coach of the Week winners, as well as the list of all-time COY winners can be found following this week’s honorees.

The Week 4 winners are:


NCAA D1: Craig Smith – University of Utah

Weekly Record (Overall): 2-0 (7-2)
Past week’s results: 81-66 W vs #4 Arizona, 67-65 (OT) W at Washington State.
Highlights: Win vs #4 Arizona was first vs ranked opponent for Smith since he’s been at Utah. Was also first home win vs ranked team since 2019. Utes are now 2-0 in the Pac-12 for first time since 2017.

NCAA D2: Vinay Patel – Angelo State University

Weekly Record (Overall): 2-0 (5-1)
Past week’s results: 86-74 W Texas A&M Kingsville, 71-63 W vs Texas A&M International.
Highlights: Patel’s squad opened Lone Star Conference play last week with two league wins. The Rams are on a four game winning streak, and are undefeated at home this season.

NCAA D3: Matt McLaughlin – Bridgewater State University

Weekly record (overall): 3-0 (8-0)
Past week’s results: 81-79 W at UMass Dartmouth, 107-83 W vs Maine Ft. Kent, 81-62 W at Norwich.
Highlights: Opened week with first W vs UMass Dartmouth since 2014. Captured Ed Hockenbury tourney title with two wins over the weekend. First-year HC McLaughlin now 8-0, which is a program record to start the season. Team went 4-19 last year.

NAIA: Chris Wright – Langston University

Weekly record (overall): 3-0 (9-0)
Past week’s results: 87-50 W vs Central Christian, 62-55 W vs Oklahoma City, 78-46 at John Brown.
Highlights: Wright took over a program that went 1-27 last season, and now has them at 9-0. The #15 Lions pushed their Sooner Athletic Conference record to a perfect 5-0 (0-22 last year). Win on Saturday snapped a 9-game losing streak vs JBU.

JUCO: Darren Stratton – Northern Essex CC

Weekly record (overall): 3-0 (12-1)
Past week’s results: 79-69 W vs Bristol, 90-76 W at CCRI, 59-57 W at Springfield Tech
Highlights: With three more wins this week, Stratton’s #12 Knights are now on an 8-game win streak, and are a perfect 7-0 in Region 21. Their 12-1 record to begin the season is the best known start for NECC in more that 25 years.
