For Immediate Release
April 14, 2021

Cleveland State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dennis Gates has been named as the HoopDirt.com NCAA D1 Coach of the Year presented by Just Play Solutions for the 2020-21 college basketball season. Gates qualified for the award by being named as the HoopDirt.com/Just Play Solutions Coach of the Week for Week 11 of the season.

In just his second season after taking over a program dealing with the transfers of many of its top players, Coach Gates guided Cleveland State to a Horizon League Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth.

After a 2019-20 season that saw Cleveland State finish 11-21 (7-11 Horizon), Gates’ squad was projected to finish seventh in the Horizon League in a preseason poll. The Vikings exceeded all expectations, winding up with a record of 19-8 (16-4 Horizon) and winning a share of the Horizon League Regular Season Title for the first time since the 2010-11 season. The 16 conference wins were the most in program history.

The Vikings ran through the Horizon League Tournament, coming back from a halftime deficit twice in three games to clinch their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2009. For his efforts throughout the season, Coach Gates was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. In his two seasons with the program, Gates holds a record of 30-29 (23-15 Horizon).
