Congratulations to the following coaches who have been selected as the Week 6 HoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions. These coaches are now eligible to receive the HoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year Award presented by Just Play Solutions which will be announced at the conclusion of the 2020-21 college basketball season.
This is the sixth season that HoopDirt.com has run the Coach of the Week and Coach of the Year programs. This season’s previous weekly winners, and a list of all-time COY winners can be found following this week’s honorees.
This season will be a bit different, however. As college basketball adjusts to life with COVID, so will we. Not every level will be honored on a weekly basis – we will honor as many of the levels as possible provided enough games are played. It’s different than in the past, but we still hope to have enough weekly winners at each level to name a Coach of the Year (NCAA DI, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO) at the end of the season
To nominate coaches for future weeks, please email [email protected] with your selection(s).
The Week 6 winners are:
NCAA DI: Frank Haith – University of Tulsa
Coach Haith guided Tulsa to a pair of impressive victories this week, extending the Golden Hurricane’s winning streak to five. TU began the week with a 65-64 upset of No. 5 Houston, marking the program’s first defeat of a top-5 opponent since 1996. The Hurricane then traveled to Cincinnati, where they had not won since 1967. However, Tulsa never trailed in the contest and was able to pull out a 70-66 victory. Now 6-2 (3-1 AAC) on the season, the Hurricane take on South Florida in a road matchup on Wednesday.
NCAA DII: Vinay Patel – Northwestern Oklahoma State University
Coach Patel picked up a milestone victory this week as his Rangers kicked off their season with two victories. Northwestern Oklahoma State forced 23 turnovers in a 100-62 defeat of Oklahoma Panhandle State in their season opener on Friday. The Rangers were back in action the following afternoon, defeating Randall by a score of 94-77 to close out their non-conference schedule. This victory marked the 100th of Coach Patel’s career. The Rangers begin conference play on Wednesday with a home contest against Southern Nazarene.
NCAA DIII: No week 6 winner awarded
NAIA: Will Shouse – Asbury University (KY)
With three more victories this week, Coach Shouse’s Eagles are off to their best start since the 2014-15 season. Asbury began the week with a pair of hard-fought wins over Covenant College before taking on Rio Grande on Saturday. The Eagles shot 13-23 from three on the way to a 76-65 victory. Now 7-2 (1-2 RSC) on the season, Asbury will remain at home when they take on Grace Christian in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.
