Former Northwest Florida State College head coach Greg Heiar has been named as the HoopDirt.com NJCAA Coach of the Year presented by Just Play Solutions for the 2021-22 college basketball season. Heiar qualified for the award by being named as the HoopDirt.com/Just Play Solutions Coach of the Week for Week 9 of the season.
In his first year at the helm, Coach Heiar guided Northwest Florida to the largest one-year turnaround in NJCAA history, culminating in the NJCAA D1 National Championship. After inheriting a program that went just 6-15 last year, Heiar led the Raiders to a 31-5 record and an at-large bid into the NJCAA DI Tournament. As the 10-seed, Northwest Florida was able to run through the tournament, defeating the top two seeds en route to the National Title.
Coach Heiar’s squad dominated its competition all season long, taking 22 of its 31 victories by double-digits and winning the 2021-22 Panhandle Conference Championship. The Raiders found themselves in the Top 25 rankings every week this season, coming in at No. 11 in the final poll, which was released prior to the National Tournament.
In addition to winning the Coach of the Tournament award at the National Championship, Coach Heiar also took home the NJCAA’s Division I Coach of the Year award for his efforts in leading the program’s turnaround this season. After his success at Northwest Florida this season, Heiar was recently named as the next head coach at New Mexico State University.
